Abigail Byrd wins the 2024 Frederick R. Selch Award

The 2024 winner of the Frederick R. Selch Award is Abigail Byrd, for her paper "The String Instrument Industry and the Triple Bottom Line," read at 53rd Annual Meeting of the American Musical Instrument Society at MIM, Phoenix, Arizona.

The committee had the very challenging task this year of deciding among thirteen (!!) excellent papers by students at vastly different stages of their academic careers. Focusing on three very general criteria--originality, presentation, and significance to the field--they found themselves returning again and again to Abigail's paper, which excelled in all three of these categories. Not only did her paper demonstrate rigorous research methods, but it also addressed issues of equity, accessibility, and sustainability and had real-world implications and suggestions for the string-instrument industry of the twenty-first century.

Selch Award committee: Lidia Chang, Laurence Libin, Edmond Johnson
